The Flipped Classroom
Classroom without walls
I went for my first meetup last night. It was held at a not-tuition tuition centre. They call themselves a campus and reject the traditional tuition style. Flipped classroom is what they advocate.
R was walking to his car one Saturday at Upper Thomson area and passed by this 'tuition centre' with students running around the centre, playing.
As a bf of a tuition centre owner, he naturally found it weird that a centre can be so chaotic. Ok, he's naturally a very curious person as well.

He went in to check it out and found that it's actually a friend's friend who is running the place. He toured the place and got me to join their meet up that is happening every first Thursday of the month.
I couldn't make it last month, fortunately, because I was told it was very awkward with many quiet moments. Haha 😂
I would say the turn up was ok last night given the quality of the topics discussed. I don't think I buy the whole flipped classroom concept because I see potential problems.

They themselves are also still trying this new pedagogy or teaching method. So, how is it different from traditional classroom teaching?
1. Throw out study tables and chairs
It is truly open concept. They have sofa, carpet, coffee table, some chairs, high tables, aerobic balls(?) and all the walls work as whiteboard.
2. Throw out the worksheets
They don't give worksheets but students have to watch a 8 min video each week for each subject at home. There are questions asked within the 8 min video and a short quiz after.
They monitor how the students watch the videos and their answers for the quizzes.

3. Throw out talkative teachers
They don't teach until necessary. They will assign things for students to do when they come and only help when they truly cannot do. Students could be doing different topics/subjects in the same class. They will probably also be in different levels. While the teacher helps one student, the other student might be doing peer teaching.
4. Throw out usual 1.5h to 2h lessons
Students come 4.5h per week, one shot. They will study for 1h plus then have a break. Their break could be playing captain's ball, soccer or basketball. Basically, sports. After that, back to studying again.
If students completed all that is required, they might even just sit down and chit chat with them. Understand what they're going through, talk about anything and everything about them.

5. Throw out other tuition centres
When students join them, they have to join all 3 subjects, i.e. Eng, Math, Sci. It's a must.

This photo was taken right at the beginning so there were some more people who were not captured.
Their fees are definitely not on the cheap side but they're not exactly on the premium rate as well.
It's probably considered expensive for the parents at my centre.
Students get to go on a overseas trip with them each year and they're thrown into a jungle in Sarawak without water and food for 3 days. It's supposed to train them, they said. Idk how it works but I probably can't survive in the

wild without food and water. The coaches will be with the kids so I think they have those pills that you throw into river water to make it drinkable.
The mix of people is quite interesting though. You have us, my sis and I, who run a traditional tuition centre. You have a Professor from UC Berkeley who works in Sgp few months of the year because of the university's collaboration. You have an Educator from Duke-NUS, a graduate student from NUS, a social worker, a software engineer who is apparently unemployed now because it's contract based or smth and another group of tuition centre owners like me.
The founders think there is a huge problem with the education system in Sg and that kids are too stressed out. Kids are not playing and they're not smiling enough. Tbh, I don't know if the problem is with the system or the kiasu parents?
They raised quite a few points on how people are sending their kids to tuition because school teachers told the parents that their kids need extra help so now the responsibility is transferred to the tuition centre. So, the question is, why do you send kids to

sch if the teachers in sch can't help them.
Now, for my centre, we are mostly trying to fill up the gaps for students who didn't understand their teachers during lesson, either because they didn't pay attention, they hate that teacher or that teacher simply cannot teach well.
Sometimes, it's not entirely the teacher's fault. The class size is simply to big to cater to everyone. One size cannot fit all.

work woes / save the date / miracle service

Attack of unreasonable parents. Like seriously?!
What's worse? I was supposed to contact the maid for attendance stuff so I did as what the mom told me and contacted the maid when this student was late today.
The maid called me and raised her voice over the phone saying I should be the one telling the students to come on time. WHY?!
Why is the responsibility on me?
Kids at this age all prefer to do fun things over studying. Furthermore, this is a NA student who is less studious to begin w

The other students were all discussing where this late student should sit so that his stench will not spread to them before he came for class.
These students are his good friends from the same school. If your good friends can't even take it and are finding ways to sit away from you already, you must be very smelly.
It affects the whole class. I'm seriously considering to drop this ill-mannered and unreasonable parent.

My Save The Date is out! I was hesitant to post this along with the sian ☝ post but well, that was how my day went and so this is how I'm gg to record it.
Finally got R to work on this. I am quite a Photoshop/Illustrator idiot so I needed him to vectorise my calligraphy so that we can overlay(?) it on the photo. Is that even the right word?
I helped a bit here and there because he is on a sucky case that requires him to work this weekend.

These were what my friends said when I sent them the Save the date:
@sugarushh : XinEr if u want the other flower one I did for my save the date u can take and use it however u want.
Me: this is done by R. I will treasure it. Haha
@chasingwaterfalls : wah, ya must frame up
Haha, R is so chill when it comes to wedding planning. So, I have to be the one pushing him to get things done.

We went for a church service tonight because R needs to work tmr morning so we can't attend the usual service.
The Sat night service is known as Miracle Service because you go there to be prayed for. Apparently, many famous people in Sg like Li Nan Xing benefitted from this miracle service.
I've been feeling so depressed this week. I was crying from Mon to Thurs, like anything also can trigger the waterfalls. I've never felt so bad before and I thought I was falling into depression or smth.

R didn't know what to do. He could only comfort me and told me to just close the centre down if I couldn't take it anymore.
It was triggered by a parent, that parent, who called and started shouting immediately. I'm a super conflict-averse person when it comes to my business. So, for the longest time, I've been taking in whatever this parent threw at me.
I guess I just lost it this time because of various other reasons as well.

I was probably being too nice the other times that's why she felt that she can just shout whenever she wants something from me.
My heart seriously pumped super fast and super hard whenever I received her calls or saw her message notifications. This is damn unhealthy. She is the only parent who is like this so I thought I could just give in to her.
I always tell myself, one more time and i will drop her business. But when I look at my students, I just feel like I can suck it up.

Anyway, I just went to the miracle service for the first time. I wanted to be prayed for so these negative people will be out of my life. Naive but well, it was worth a shot.
They had the worshipping as well and I teared as usual. R didn't tear at all this time but his hair stood. I could feel the hair on his arm poking me. Haha

I kept telling myself that she is a test sent by God, to test my patience and level of tolerance. I used to think that my patience and tolerance levels are damn low but she had managed to hit new high score every single time without fail.
I hope the miracle will happen soon even if it means I have to make the miracle happen myself.
