Makeup: How I clean my brushes
I love doing makeup and also all the things that comes with it, i.e. cleaning. I want to be more environmentally friendly and maintain my brushes well. So, today I'll be sharing a very easy way to clean your makeup brushes thoroughly. There are in fact many different ways out there and if I remember correctly, this is the method introduced by lovely Michelle Phan on youtube :)
Things that you'll need:
Dirty makeup brushes - of course right, duhhh
Olive oil
Anti-Bacterial dish washing detergent / Shampoo (is fine as well)
Clean water
Tissue paper / Towel
Plate / Container
Olive Oil |
Plate with dish washing detergent |
Container with water x 2 |
Step 1 - Mix the Olive oil and detergent together on a plate.
Look at how dirty these 2 brushes are. Stained with foundation and eye shadow powder that I used.
Step 2 - Dip your brush into the mixture of olive oil and dish washing detergent.
The anti-bacterial detergent will clean the brush hair thoroughly, leaving no trace of makeup. The olive oil will act as a conditioner to retain the essential oils in the brush hair and also not dry it up.
Step 3 - Dip the brush into clean water making sure that only the hair is touching the water.
This will prevent water from entering the stem of the brush which has the glue that holds the brush hair together
Step 4 - Dip the brush into another container of clean water to make sure it is completely clean.
Tadah!!! Sparkling clean brushes!
Repeat the steps for all the brushes that you have:)
Step 5 - Leave the brushes laying horizontally to dry
This is what I use when I need to clean the brushes immediately. I bring one bottle out every time I go for makeup assignment and also keep one at home so I can use it.
If you use the makeup brush cleaner daily then I think you can get away with cleaning the brushes thoroughly every week or every two weeks depending on how often you use the brushes or if you used them at all. haha.
Some videos here for you if you want to find out other ways of cleaning your brushes :) Enjoy
